Hovland's final round told a different story. The Norwegian, who had led by one entering Sunday, produced a 2-over 72. Gerard's day had unravelled at the first hole with a double bogey, and he "felt a little off standing over the golf ball the majority of the day." He finished third at 12-under.

Rory McIlroy, who had needed a strong Sunday to apply real pressure to Scheffler, bogeyed three of his first five holes and could not fight his way back, finishing T4. Wyndham Clark shot 72 and tied for 21st — a champion's week ending with a whimper. Justin Rose furnished the tournament's purest moment on an otherwise predictable Sunday: an ace at the 9th hole.
